EPISODE SYNOPSIS

Another evil entity is sent to Sleepy Hollow, the legendary Sandman, who is haunting Abbie in her dreams about what she did after witnessing the demon in the woods that fateful day with Jenny.  She has been avoiding it for many years, as well as her sister, but now she must face the truth.

Captain Irving calls Ichabod and Abbie to the scene of a jumper after she is asked for by name.  The jumper is a Forensic Psychologist, Dr. Vega at Tarrytown Psychiatric, where Abbie's sister Jenny has been in and out of for years. Though she has no idea who this person is, Abbie attempts to talk the doctor down but it's too late!  She falls to her death but not before mentioning treating her sister Jenny, "I believed everything she told me but I lied."  As the Coronor is about to take the body away, Irving, Ichabod and Abbie all observe one of the victim's eyes turn to sand!

Puzzled at the mention of Jenny, Abbie explains that her sister Jenny had been in and out of jail, psychiatric hospitals, etc... ever since she told authorities they had seen a monster in the woods.  Because of this, Abbie and Jenny led different paths in life.  Ichabod believes the deaths and monster Abbie is seeing in her dreams, is evil sent to thwart her as a Witness.  Abbie is still not sold on being one of the two Witnesses foretold in the Book of Revelations.  Jenny was last arrested for stealing a bunch of survival gear in preparation of End of Days, which Ichabod feels is warranted based on what they are facing.  He suggests they visit her at Tarrytown Pyschiatric, however, she refuses to allow Abbie but approves Ichabod. He warns Jenny of the coming Apocalypse, tells her what happened to Dr. Vega and asks what the doctor meant when she said, "We all have it coming".  Unfortunately Jenny claims she can't help and her conscious is clear, then challenges Ichabod to ask Abbie what really happened.

Ichabod believes Abbie is afraid to admit what she saw and that she allowed her sister to be taken away. Abbie then tells Ichabod something she never told anyone, not even the police or Corbin.  The man credited with finding the girls, Mr. Gillespie, actually did see the demon that day but told no one!  All Abbie recalls is seeing the demon, then waking up in the forest after missing for four days!  She has no idea what happened during that time, no memories of it.  They decide to speak to Mr. Gillespie, however Irving is already there after a report of shots fired. Gillespie is holding his wife hostage with a gun and asks speak to Abbie.  Though she successfully approaches the distraught man, he shoots himself in the head but not before telling Abbie, "You can't help me. He's coming for you next.  The Sandman. He's coming when you fall asleep. You're dead."

After Abbie describes the monster as having deep black holes for eyes and flesh where his mouth should be, Ichabod believes it could be a Demon Spirt or Mohawk Dream Demon. He explains that Mohawk Indians passed down a story from generation to generation, of a Dream Demon that will come for your soul if you don't live righteously.  The demon infiltrates ones dreams, taunting its victim and then drives the person crazy and takes their soul to Hell!  Of course Abbie is afraid to go to sleep as she is pegged to be the Sandman's next victim, so they search out a Shaman. Shamen are few and far between in the 21st century, but Abbie leads them to a used car salesman at "Geronimotor", who happens to be one. After convincing him to help he warns if she dies in her dream, she dies permanently!  Feeling she has no other choice, she moves forward with the plan. Ichabod decides to join her as back up and after drinking an elixir, both are put into a dream state, so she can face the Sandman once and for all!

In her dream state, she sees the Sandman and tries to shoot it, but the bullets have no effect.  Instead, she's immediately catapulted back into her original nightmare, afraid to tell authorities she saw the demon in the forest though her sister pleads her to do so. Meanwhile Ichabod enters in the same location Abbie had, but sees a red door which he walks through and is transported to the precinct. As he walks down the hallway, he observes the other two victims hanging from the ceiling! In the Interrogation room, the Sandman is about to reach Abbie who is hiding behind the one-way mirror window when Ichabod shouts to leave her alone! With the flick of his wrist, Ichabod immediately doubles over in pain! After another warning from Ichabod, the monster turns his arm into sand!  Realizing she must face her fears, Abbie finally admits to what she saw in the woods that fateful day, which turns the Sandman to ice!  With the swing of a chair, Abbie smashes the nightmare monster to pieces!

At the end of the episode, though exhausted after sleepless nights and her ordeal, Abbie finally goes to see Jenny again at Tarrytown Psychiatric. Unfortunately, Jenny has disappeared!

FUNNY MOMENTS: Ichabod has a little trouble trying to rewind a video tape; Ichabod tries his first energy drink and chokes on it; Irving pretends to be mad after finding a sign with the beheaded horse in his office

a few historical facts

THE MOHAWKS: During the 18th century, the Mohawks originally lived along the Mohawk River in the Province of New York.  They were allied with the British during the Revolutionary War mostly due to the Colonists encroaching upon their land and because they had a treaty with the British Crown.  However after the British lost the war, the Colonists forced British allies, including the Mohawks to give up their territory.  Most relocated to Canada where the Crown granted them land and money for their loyalty.

THE SANDMAN LORE: Originally derrivd from Northern European folklore, it's a story of an entity that only wishes to bring comforting, sweet dreams to children. To accomplish this, he blows sand in their eyes so they are unable to keep them open, then enters their subconcious in dreamland.  However, through the years the Sandman has been depicted many different ways, including as an evil entity that can take ones soul while in dreamland.

TWISTORY: Ichabod worked with Mohawk tribes during the Revolutionary War while in the 37th Regiment, Mohawk's were used as Colonists spies that would infiltrate the Crown and never be suspected.

BEHIND-THE-SCENES MOMENT: Tom explained how there was supposed to be sand coming out of his mouth when the Sandman almost kills him in dreamland, but they didn't add the sand!
